ImPACT Technology Update No. 1: Multi-Slice CT Scanners. MDA/00/23, Mar-00

This report provides an introduction to multi-slice scanning, the most important recent development in CT scanners. Following on from the introduction of the Elscint Twin, in 1992, four manufacturers announced scanners capable of acquiring four simultaneous slices in 1998. These scanners have greater flexibility over conventional single slice scanners, and can perform scans faster, with more z-axis detail or over larger volumes, or with a combination of these three benefits. The brief, four page, report examines the key issues relating to multi-slice scanning, including scanner specification, detector construction, helical pitch, interpolation, image quality, dosimetry and related topics.
